MLS Weekend Notes: Toronto and LA Routs Provide Plenty of Goals for Yanks

Toronto FC had a field day on Saturday when the hosted Orlando City.  Quite the poor host they played as they sent Orlando packing after a 5-0 win at BMO Field.  20-year-old Marco Delgado scored the game’s opener in the 46th minute for his third tally of the season and Jozy Altidore picked up two goals in his 18 minutes of action.  The brace brought Altidore’s MLS goal count to nine this season.  Although not on pace to score as many league goals as in 2011/12 at AZ, he is scoring at a higher rate taking into account his time spent with the US national team and sidelined with that thigh injury.

Michael Bradley reasserted his position in the Toronto win as well, picking up two assists including on Delgado’s 46th minute goal which proved to be the game winner.  With that, Bradley surpassed his assist total of four from last season.  It took him nine less appearances to pick up five assists this season.  He has guys like Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco to partially thank for that increase in productivity.  Toronto scored 44 goals all of last season (34 games).  After Sunday’s rout and with the help of the offseason additions of Altidore and Giovinco, the Reds have scored 42 goals through 24 games so far this season and sit happily in good position for the club’s first-ever playoff berth.

Sebastian Lletget continues to impress as he tallied his seventh MLS goal in just his tenth start for the LA Galaxy.  His cheeky finish in the 70th minute courtesy of great work on the flank by Gyasi Zardes and Steven Gerrard’s shot/pass put the Galaxy up 4-0.  Zardes, amid European transfer rumors, scored the opening goal of the match in the 36th minute, his sixth of the MLS season.

Jack McInerney picked up his first goal for the Columbus Crew and it couldn’t have come at a better time as the 23-year-old put away an 88th minute game winner in the Crew’s 3-2 win over Sporting KC.  It was his fifth MLS goal of the season after scoring four with Montreal before being traded.  Ethan Finlay opened the scoring for Columbus in the 35th minute, tallying his eighth of the season to go along with his 13 assists.

Graham Zusi put Sporting KC up 2-1 in the 62nd minute courtesy of an assist from Matt Besler.  It was Besler’s third MLS assist this season, a new career-high for him.  Zusi has managed just two goals and four assists in diminished minutes this season due to nagging injuries and a spurt with the national team for the Gold Cup.

Chris Wondolowski picked up his 12th goal of the 2015 season as San Jose kept rolling and picked up a 2-0 win at DC United, the first place team in the Eastern Conference.  Wondolowski’s 4th minute tally was the eventual game winner and it was his 14th goal of the year including his US Open Cup brace.  Fatai Alashe earned his 20th start of his rookie season and worked a 67-minute shift before making way for fellow US U-23 teammate Marc Pelosi, who made his sixth MLS appearance since signing from Liverpool.

Dillon Serna scored a first minute winner as Colorado beat Chicago 1-0 in a matchup of MLS bottom-feeders.  It was Serna’s third goal of the season although he has played significantly less minutes than last year.
